Good Vibrations

Hail and Good Day to You,

So much to talk about…next Monday will complete a year of medical repair and I hope be the last doctor’s appointment…I have been tested and worked on from the ground up and am ready for this to be over…most of these medical issues were brought about by the beatings I endured- over 20 years since the last one and I still pay the price…it has taken everything I have to rebuild and repair my body in a natural format…yes, it is quite painful at times-I am worth it…I have been blessed to have the most awesome support system and my paddle:)

Next week I will be making appearances in Boca Raton…Rachel at Spanish River has been so cool as to hook me up with a yak so I can keep in practice…I will also be stopping at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center…say it with me “SWEEEET”…

I will start a full workout schedule in April as we ready for the 2014 trip…The SunshinePaddle will tear up the coast on April 1, 2014…I am so ready for it and Debby is getting her car ready for the trip…so very excited…anyone who wants to work out or paddle with me please let me know…

The Sun RayPaddle is in the process of tying up a few loose ends for the final push…we are planning menus…we will park at Anclote and be driven to Hudson…the 14 mile paddle has many goodies in the entrance package…at the end of this Paddle will be an after party and BBQ…so cool…this will be so much fun, I can hardly wait…

Carry On,

Sun Ray On The Way

Hail and Good Day,

So much cool stuff to talk about…I have been working with Pasco Parks and Rec to make a very special paddle…I have also hired a guy to BBQ at the end of the paddle…nothing better at the end of a long paddle…we have set up a parking and staging situation that is quite cool…I have been getting info from all over the county for entrance packages…

Going down the gulf coast of Pasco is special…much of the pristine beauty is still in place…many of the inhabited areas have small secrets and hideaways..we will paddle through 2 local dolphin pods and depending on water temp, there are 2 manatee families…storks, pelicans, egrets and eagles should be easily spotted and why one should bring a camera

This is a 14 mile paddle…please be sure to pack accordingly…this is Florida, sun protection is a must…make sure to have plenty of fluid with you…the closer it gets the more excited I am…an air horn and or whistle…hat and or a face wrap…paddle float is a good thing…do not forget your bilge pump…bring hand food as you will need to eat something every hour to keep up energy…first aid kit…deck compass comes in quite helpful- even if you have a GPS…spare paddles…rope…spray skirt is optional- I do not use one when I am in the gulf…knife…hand crank radio…trash container and toilet paper…pfd…sunglasses and a spare pair of sunglasses…binoculars…towel…drybag…mp3- good to have a spare for this too…change of clothes…camera…epirb/spot tracker-if you do not have one just stay close to a paddler who does…

I am now working with the State at getting The Sunshine Paddle registered from an even to a chairity…they have been having a hard time understanding that no one makes a paycheck…so we are currently going back and forth- just so much fun…Sunshine Paddle has a day in South Carolina Sponsored…so it begins…April 15 of 2014 is on the Calendar…The long Trip from St. Augustine, Florida to Wiscasset, Maine will be made…so much work to be done…

Well no time do I have to be tarrying…

Ever So Busy

Ahoy Mate,

Since we are no longer ‘just an event’, I had to get with the IRS and the State of Florida to change our status…this took many phone calls and much paperwork, but I feel it is all working…I am an automatic 501c as I take in $5000 or less according to the IRS- they said I could file for a letter, but it would cost $400 to file the form and donations were deductable either way- I can live without the letter and they consider me a charitable sports team…with the state there was a ton of paperwork and a declaration of all donations and expenses (I posted a copy of this onsite)…all is done and sent in and in the next 2 weeks I should show up as being a registered…YEA!!!! I have a friend who has stayed on my butt about this- I hate office work, I am thankful for her motivation:)

To give more businesses a chance to get in on the entrance packages, I have attended several networking meetings- Pasco/ Hernando Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, East Pasco Networking group, etc...they all let me speak about The Sunshine Paddle and the upcomming events…I have met many interesting people and find it inspiring how many people are working to make a better community…it reminded me of the old town hall meetings- people talking business, eating- really great food, and speaking on ways to make the community shine…totally killer

I got Walter on the Weeki Wachee…he is still a newbie, but he tries as he knows how happy it makes me…the river is always a challenge in paddle blade control (unless you paddle like gma)…we were blessed with so many manatee- lots of new moms and calves…Walter enjoyed seeing the sheepshead fish…the was around 72f with an air temp of 50f…it was a really good run

Fort De Soto is one of the lovelier parks…there are many different places to launch from…a protected area for newbies to a paddle out to the Skyway Bridge…so much to see…like a child, I always have to stop and play with the very big guns and play in the bunkers of the fort…really there are so many different birds and aquatic animals, I could not do them justice…when you come, bring something to collect seashells in…this park has several beaches and each has its own flavor…really amazing place

Now is the time to make your plans for the Sun Ray Paddle…we are working to bring together a great paddle and would love for you to join us…Come paddle with me…

Girly Pirate Underway

Ahoy Mate,

With a new year upon us, we here at the paddle office are hard at work…so much news to fill you in on…
Sunshine Paddle of 2014 is real…planning has started…contact Dee, Debby or Chris if you want to sponsor either ½ or one whole day…updates as to any news on the east coast that you feel may impede the trip is most welcome…we are starting in St Augustine, FL in April…I will stop in Wiscasset Harbor, ME…I expect it to take 45 days…

Sun RayPaddle of 2013 (a.k.a. Paddle Pasco)…happening April 13, 2013…this is about 15 miles…I have made arrangements to make a dry run next Saturday to get video and pics…this will also give us exact GPS and notes for the maps...don't forget to send in your entrance form…I have also been speaking to many small businesses in the area- spent a whole day going up and down US19 from SR52- SR54 shaking hands…they are all willing to help with goodies for the entrance packages…it is so exciting…though people do not have much, they are doing what they can…how blessed am I?

When I am on the paddle, you may start seeing a camera crew with me…Taylor and crew will be helping me make a TV show…many people do not get to see the diverse amount of wildlife we have here in Florida…my camera man Taylor spoke to me and we are currently pitching the idea…wish us luck…you can check out our photo video…we would like to join on with Animal Planet, but am open to other ideas…it really is something special and I would love to share it…

The life of Girly Pirate, as always, is under full sail:)

We all look the same? Really?

Ahoy,

I must talk to you about a recent interaction…I know I have been raised to be open in my mind and heart…this kind of blew my mind though…

I ran up to Crystal River to see 2 Notch (or let her see me is more the point), so she would not come into open water looking for me…the gulf is too cold for her right now and like me she is older- let’s just say I worry…
CrystalRiver Kayaks had a Yak ready for me…really great place…I paddled out and headed for the 3 Sisters Spring…the air temp was 50f and the water was 72f making very urethral fog …about ½ way there I ran into Huggy Bear…he was being so funny and introduced me to another youngster- I call him Billy…a BIG bull manatee approached to see what was going on and to let me know what he was there to protect the kids…I chuckled and named him Sealy Booth…

Sealy and the boys swam around the corner beside me as I continued to paddle…up in front of us, freakin snorkel people…I pointed to a canal we were passing and told him to take the boys were they would not disturbed…they turned off and I continued…due to the paddle, I know most of the manatee between Crystal River and Ft Myers (5 family groups)…suddenly I was noticing them plus more, this was like a huge family reunion…a young bull stopped me before I floated into the NO HUMAN ZONE…I giggled as he scolded me

Sitting there I was looking in the Manatee Zone for 2 Notch when one of the volunteers for fish and wild life asked what I was doing…several Manatee were trying to get my attention…since she was up on a walk 3 foot higher than me or them, I asked her if she saw 2 Notch…I started to describe what 2 Notch looked like and she said ‘How can you tell them apart? They all look the same to me.’…at that moment, I was angry…I asked ‘when you see children- do they all look alike?’

Ya…I know- I am a wave hugger…the young male pushed my Yak toward the springs and the current towed me the rest of the way back…in front of me was a young male (approx 9- 10 month) with 5 propeller marks down his back…tears fell down my cheeks that one so young should have them- not that any should, but he was so young…he came up and snorted me up…lol…I asked if he was taking a break from the old men and got another snort…I told him to take it easy and paddled back to the channel…

I asked the young bull if he had seen 2 Notch…he swam away quickly…Taking pics, sitting waiting and watching…Tap Tap Tap…it was my big girl…the bull went into the Manatee Zone…she went back down the canal with me…this big female swam up and stared pushing my Yak and cornered me…all I could picture is when vacations attack…lol…she swam up on the inside and gave birth…OMG…2 Notch acted as midwife sort of…I was so befuddled to be entreated to such a thing

Furtherer up the channel was a bull I call Durante…he has a cute snoz…then another mother and baby thought to play with my boat like a Tonka Truck…the mother and child come from down by the keys…you could tell by the color and attitude- really fun…we are doing better, but not well enough to come off the endangered list yet

I was so amazed how well they all got along and how different they all are…some had more hair, different color skin, birth marks, etc…it was then I wondered if they think we all look alike…in my head I laughed…I paddled back and jumped on the road home…I stopped at Emily’s in Homosassa for an awesome burger and as I sat there going over all that had happened…I showed the kind waitress my camera of photos and asked ‘do they all look alike to you?’…she flipped through the pics and thoughtfully said no…sweet girl…

So now I ask you ‘Do they all look alike?’

Ride the Peace Train

It has been a busy week in my paddle world…today is a day of peace…did you find someone to hug today…GREAT news has found me…the doctors have found my issues thanks to a truck driver for the shelter…it is nice to know what is wrong and how to cope with it:)

Today was the Peace Breakfast for Sunrise of Pasco to say Thank You to all of those who try so hard to make our community a wonderful place…it was heartwarming to see how many turned out…my videographer Taylor was there to take the opening of our new TV show…the stories of a few women were told- for me this is bone chilling and can transport me back to the worst beating…I am proud of how much better I am doing with this…pull from the inside and rise from those ashes…

SunshinePaddle 2014 is starting to book…Debby will meet with me after the new year to sit and plot the trip with me…As Terry and Yoda taught me- Plan Your Paddle, Paddle Your Plan…Volunteers will be needed in every state- this does involve actual work, if you think you can or want to handle it please give me a call at (813)907-6279

Sun Ray 2013 is our Pasco Paddle…I have been running like a chicken with my head cut off getting with many local business about goodies for the welcome packages…I have been paddling in the areas looking for any interesting things or things to watch for…I am so excited to show off my county and how amazing our gulf coast is- it will be so cool to share this with all of you…the entrance forms are up and ready to fill out

My friend Tim got a new kayak…we took it to Anclote River Park…I felt special that he chose me to help him break it in…it was a stable ride, though I missed having a rudder…It was an Old Town that he bought off Amazon…got to him in good shape and on time…we had fun

May you always have a shell in your pocket and sand in your shoes…

Girly Pirate Strong

Sun Ray Paddle is a go 4/13/13…I am currently working with businesses that wish to help with whatever they can hook us up with…in a brainstorming session with the crew, I was informed that the crew would like a choice of where there donation will go- Sunrise of Pasco Abuse Shelter/ Atonement Food Pantry/ Katie Walk and Ride for Organ Donation/ Pasco County Parks…you will be able to choose on your entrance forms…Greg was nice enough to aide with the wording on the forms and Chris converted the file for me- much easier said than done and it is now live on the website…Forms and donations should be sent to:

Sun Ray Paddle

30131 Clearview Dr

Wesley Chapel, FL 33545

ATTN: Catherine Cooper

Mrs. Cooper will be sending out all welcome packages on March 15, 2013…she will also be presenting all donation checks on April 15 and 16…all personal information will be shredded the day following the paddle – nothing will be shared unless you request it…I have paddled the course in the last week and find it to be challenging and enjoyable…

The Sunshine Paddle 2014

I have started to prepare for my paddle again…I feel much more aware and know we have much better strategy’s in place…I have started putting together marketing and am looking to secure hotels for the journey- I am just too old to camp…lol…Debby and I are working a better food routines…we have also started plotting the trip…I want a car to make the trip in this time too

This month is about being thankful…I have so much to be thankful for…wonderful family, awesome friends…the ability to help others in need…the ability to work at what I love…may you all be so blessed:)
